A Montana ranching family faces off against others encroaching on their land. Forrie J. Smith, who plays Lloyd, is well-versed in the world of Rodeo. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and reverts to the SoCal speaking voice he normally uses. Featured in WatchMojo: Top 10 Summer TV Shows Not on Your Radar (2018). (Review is for the first two seasons only) I went into this show not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and cinematography are superb. It’s basically Mafia Wars in Montana with intermittent giant doses of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horses while fishing)! Costner is a terrific actor and the lead of the Duttons. The show hits its peak when it shows the chessboard moves the Duttons and their enemies engage in. The show gets rubbernecked early in season 2, but picks up again halfway through. Kelsey Asbille is the weakest link as Monica and miscasts her hand, the plot drifts awkwardly and the acting just misses the mark where Rip was. Thomas Rainwater is also fantastic. The plot is lively and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s «All The Pretty Horses» was a little more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this show hits in a similar way. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to watch it.
