Imprisoned in Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, Divine G finds purpose by performing in a theater company with other inmates in this story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art. At the beginning of the film, the actors are auditioning for different roles in the play. The group is criticized for not doing comedy, but their previous work was the comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Featured in Late Night with Seth Meyers: Anna Faris/Colman Domingo/Jose Medelez (2024). Although this new independent film, distributed by A24, is set in a New York prison, it’s not so much a «prison film» as a «prison film.» in the usual sense and, rather, an emotionally impressive and inspiring drama about how art, especially theater, can rehabilitate people in need of rehabilitation. This theme in the film is depicted sincerely and movingly and is the cornerstone of a whole fascinating story.
The film takes some time, but it still captures and captivates
Colman Domingo plays the main character, who is in prison but helps run the prison theater troupe. Domingo’s performance is excellent: he shows restrained emotions, having a strong impact on the viewer, and also exudes a deep sense of compassion. The supporting cast is also excellent, and many of the supporting actors appear to have been imprisoned.
«Sing-Sing» isn’t perfect, as the development of the secondary characters could be improved, but its beating heart and thoughtful, human tone are truly touching and memorable
The inclusion of the theater program in the narrative creates comic relief, but also pathos and a powerful connection between the prisoners and the director of the program. Highly recommended. 8/10.
